What’s a normal reaction to have post waxing?

11 Jun

Many times I have clients who come in and they are uninformed about what to expect post waxing. Many believe that you come in, it is pain free, and your skin leaves looking like it did before. I’m sorry to say, but there is always going to be post waxing reactions.

Here are some common normal reactions:

1) Your skin is red, inflamed, and bumpy. Expect your skin to be like this for around 24 hours, afterwards it should be smooth like a baby’s bottom!

2) You have some spot bleeding.

3) You feel tender and sore. You can use a cold compress to help ease the discomfort.

What is considered to be NOT normal:

1) You are bleeding non-stop. Depending on the severity, you may need stitches. If you are concerned, I would call your nurse/doctor to make sure everything is ok. I would also make sure that you tell your Esthetician.

2) Your skin has been torn or pulled off and the area stings as a result. Ice the area, put some neosporin, and try to avoid friction in the area by wearing loose clothing. You may experience post pigmentation (where the skin gets darker) and this will be temporary, but know that the pigmentation can last 3-6 months. If it is an area that may be exposed to the sun, make sure you cover it with sunscreen or it will get darker!

If you have experienced anything else that I may have not mentioned, feel free to drop me a note and I will make sure I address it.

Hi, I just got my first ‘professionally’ done brazilian (normally I do a combo of wax and shave by myself), and it was AWFUL. Nevermind that the customer service was horrible and the results are so sub-par, but the lady used strip-wax, was haphazard and now i have a patch of extremely tender redness where she tore my skin off. Now that patch is extremely puffy and swollen. When/If I get another brazilian in the future, what should I look for in an esthetician to ensure this DOESNT HAPPEN EVER AGAIN? I am in so much pain and I regard myself as having a high pain threshold. Would love your help.

      Hi Annie,

I am SO SORRY to hear that you had such a horrible experience. Here are some suggestions:

      1) Ask for an Esthetician who specializes in brazilian waxes and only use someone with 5+ years of experience.(Come see me if you are in San Francisco 😉 )
      2) Ask specifically what kind of wax do they use. Make sure that they use hard wax for some or all of the session. If they also use the strip wax, ask them if it is wax suitable for ‘sensitive’ skin.
      3) Make sure you call and let the place know what happened. They need to know so they can look into the situation to figure out if the wax was too warm or maybe the Esthetician needs more training (or be taken off of the schedule for brazilians).

Make sure you put plenty of aloe vera on there and some kind of antibacterial cream, like neosporin.

Good luck and I hope this answers your questions.

      Best,
      Thy

I just stumbled Upon your site. I had a Brazilian done today and now have a tear. What caused that?

Hi Ashley, Sorry for the late reply. Tears usually happen for these reasons:

      1) The skin was not held taut enough.
      2) The skin was not well protected by a pre-wax agent (i.e. powder, oil).
      3) The wax was too hot.
      4) Improper technique.
